Idris Elba Is Replacing Will Smith as Deadshot inSuicide Squad 2

“Brightburn” Trailer 2 Shows Just How Important the Kents Were

By Kelvin Owens

Idris Elba has been revealed as Will Smith’s replacement in the role of Deadshot in the “Suicide Squad” sequel at Warner Bros. Pictures.

Smith had to depart the project due to scheduling conflicts, and the studio moved fast to secure another A-lister to replace him before filming begins in September. Elba met with the film’s writer/director James Gunn and things went so well he quickly began serious talks.

According to multiple sources, the busy Idris Elba (who has Hobbs & Shaw and, uh, Cats coming up later this year) is replacing Smith as the Suicide Squad’s resident marksman, in a sequel that the Hollywood Reporter describes as consisting largely of new characters not seen in the original film, with the key exceptions being Deadshot and Harley Quinn. While Will Smith’s performance as Deadshot was arguably one of Suicide Squad’s few bright spots, the character’s role on the team and the dynamics he often has with Harley Quinn are the sort of great story fodder that make a strong argument for recasting him in order to keep him within the franchise.

The release date of the project is currently set for August 6th 2021.
