Netflix ‘Resident Evil’ original TV show tipped in early development

Matt Smith Joining Jared Leto in 'Morbius'

A ‘Fast and Furious’ Female Spin-Off in Development?

By Kelvin Owens

The Doctor is in! Out of all of the superheroes in the Marvel Comics universe, Spider-Man's lineup of villains is perhaps the most eclectic, intriguing, and horrifying. Morbius the Living Vampire is certainly no exception, and with Venom and Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse enjoying big box office runs, it's no surprise that Sony is looking to expand their own "Spider-Verse" with a movie based on Morbius, with Jared Leto in the lead role and Matt Smith now potentially joining the film's cast.

There’s no information on who Smith will be playing, but according to Variety, it will be a major role in the story. He will also join the previously cast Adria Arjona, who will play Martine Bancroft, the female lead.

Leto will play Morbius, a.k.a. Dr. Michael Morbius, "a scientist who suffered from a rare blood disease and attempted to cure himself to disastrous results. Instead of being cured, he became afflicted with a condition that was a form of vampirism — the thirst for blood, along with fangs and super strength — and fought Spider-Man. Over time, however, he became a slightly heroic figure in his own right and even headlined his own comic book titles."
The latest role for Smith comes after a string of Hollywood successes in recent years including his acclaimed turn as Prince Philip in Netflix’s The Crown.  This combined with the rumors that smith will be in the next Star Wars film, and his upcoming zombie film " Patient Zero" means we will be seeing lots of  Mr Smith, which is fine by us.

The movie has been described as a horror action story that will follow Morbius, who is “disgusted by his own bloodlust, so he chooses to prey upon criminals he deems unworthy of life." The movie is said to be aiming for a February 2019 production start date and it’s expected to aim for a PG-13 rating.

The film will be directed by Daniel Espinosa (Safe House, Life). The script is being written by Lost in Space scribes Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless.
