Video Game Movies Coming Soon

By Kelvin Owens

Oddly enough, video games and movies go hand and hand. Especially in a world where it is safer to make a film from a source that already has a fan base, instead of risking the unknown script. With that said, we have caught up in technology to the point in which filmmakers can bring the massive gaming worlds to life. And 2019 and beyond will be doing just that, here are just a few video game movies coming in this year and beyond.

Monster Hunter

This game franchise is a massive world with massive monsters in it. Starring Milla Jovovich, who is no slouch to the video game movie world, Monster Hunter is an upcoming fantasy action thriller film directed and written by Paul W. S. Anderson. Other stars joining the cast Tony Jaa, T.I., Ron Perlman, Meagan Good, and Diego Boneta.

Resident Evil Reboot

Speaking of Milla Jovovich, while she carried this original franchise on her back, the star as of now won't be returning for the series reboot. The plot is unknown, but Variety reports  "The “Resident Evil” reboot has found its writer and director.
“47 Meters Down” director Johannes Roberts has been hired by Constantin Film to take the reins on the horror reboot."

Oh, the hours I spent in my youth hacking and slashing my way through the hordes of enemies in this game.  Dynasty Warriors is an upcoming Hong Kong fantasy-action film based on the Japanese video game franchise of the same title by Koei Tecmo. The film is being directed by Roy Chow, produced and written by Christine To, and yes there will be Lü Bu.

Detective Pikachu

My first thought when hearing about this movie was, "what no Ash?" But when I saw the trailer and saw the route they were taking I was ready for it. Detective Pikachu is a prime example of what I meant when I stated that our tech needed to catch up. Sure there have been countless animated Pokemon movies, but to bring them to our world in this way is something you could not pull off in the 90s. Toss in Deadpool... I mean Ryan Reynolds voicing the cute little guy and boom, shut up and take my money.

Detective Pikachu is an upcoming sci-fi action, comedy, mystery film directed by Rob Letterman and written by Nicole Perlman and Letterman. In a world where people collect Pokémon to do battle, a boy comes across an intelligent talking Pikachu who seeks to be a detective.

Sonic has always been there, even when Saga fell, the little guy just would not go away. Even with his buff legs (which I get, he runs all day), I will still be lined up opening day for this one. Not to mention the amazing casting of Jim Carry as the old Doctor Robotnik, who knows what he will bring to that role. Juvenile delinquent Sonic the Hedgehog and local policeman Tom Wachowski must stop Dr. Eggman from completing his plans for world domination. The film stars Ben Schwartz as Sonic the Hedgehog and Jim Carrey as Sonic's nemesis Dr. Robotnik, alongside James Marsden as Tom Wachowski, Tika Sumpter, Adam Pally, and Neal McDonough. It is directed by Jeff Fowler in his directorial debut and written by Patrick Casey, Josh Miller, and Oren Uziel, from a story by Van Robichaux and Evan Susser.
