Zazie Beetz Reveals Joaquin Phoenix ‘Joker’ Script Was Being Rewritten During Filming

By Kelvin Owens

I had my doubts about this film to start with, this just adds to them. Joker actress Zazie Beetz has revealed that the upcoming origin film starring Joaquin Phoenix as the Clown Prince of Crime was undergoing rewrites during the film’s production.

Speaking with MTV, Beetz explained that the entire film was rewritten during principal photography. Beetz revealed that she and director Todd Phillips would go to his trailer and rewrite the scene the night before shooting:
“The script was great. We rewrote the whole thing while shooting it. Literally, we would go into Todd’s trailer and write the scene for the night and then do it.”  Beetz went on to say: “During hair and makeup, we’d memorize those lines and then do them, and then we’d reshoot that three weeks later. We had to do everything because Joaquin [Phoenix] had lost so much weight that we couldn’t do reshoots later on so we were figuring it out.”

It’s fairly common for scripts to be reworked during shooting. It’s not as common, though, for the entire script to be rewritten. It’s possible, of course, that Beetz was just exaggerating a bit.

Looking forward to Joker? Or not? Let us know in the comments.
